Analysis: Is Sarajevo a safe City?

irfan-neficSafety in the Sarajevo Canton (KS) can be analyzed from two different viewpoints. One is the factual situation in the field and the other is the feeling of security that the citizens have.

When it comes to the first aspect, the number of criminal offenses at the territory of KS decreased in 2015 in comparison with 2014. Moreover, the number of severe criminal offenses against the life and body also decreased.

But what has increased? The increase can be found in the number of traffic accidents that are mostly caused by inadequate vehicle speed, conditions on the roads, and weather conditions.

Everything usually comes down to the human factor because a person who knows that any of the car systems is faulty and not operating properly and still enters traffic represents a risk and that is the human factor, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Sarajevo Canton Irfan Nefić.

Nefić emphasized that the number of injured persons increased, but the number of killed persons decreased by 25 percent.

“This is the first year that we have more killed drivers than pedestrians. Over the past five years, pedestrians were the most endangered participants in traffic,” said Nefić.

Spokesman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of KS claims that he disagrees with the citizens who claim that police is inefficient.

“I responsibly claim that there will always be criminal offenses. However, the criminal offenses have the trend of reduction for five years already. I understand the concern of citizens, but do we have the mass killings such as countries in the region have? Thank God, we don’t. In comparison with other cities in the region and Europe, Sarajevo is a safe city. One person is killed on every 100.000 citizens, and take a look at the statistics in other major cities,” Nefić concluded.
