Mountaineering ecological association “Stožer” Kupres expressed concern about the production of magnesium in Kupres.

The association sent a letter to the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism, in which they expressed their views and concerns regarding the proposed magnesium production project in Kupres.

As they say, they do not take a positive or negative position on the project, but are solely concerned about the ambiguities in the environmental impact study and the missing information, without which they cannot form a position.

In their letter, they pointed out the potential risks that such a project could have on the natural environment, hiking trails, and the general quality of life in the Kupre region.

They believe that the preservation of natural beauty and resources is crucial for the future of this community.

From the Association for Entrepreneurship, Agritourism Attivo Kupres also expressed their dissatisfaction with the project for the production of magnesium and other co-products.

As the president of the association, Tanja Ćurković, said, it is a very harmful chemical industry, the start of which would cause incalculable harmful consequences for Kupres and much beyond, and whose production, precisely because of its harmfulness, has been shut down everywhere in Europe.

“After a thorough study of the Project’s Impact Study on the Environment, amendments to the Study and participation in two discussions held on this topic, we concluded that at this moment it is necessary to send objections to this study to the Federal Ministry of the Environment in order to stop further activities on this project”. “Therefore, the Attivo Kupres Association sent its reasoned remarks to the competent ministry on seven pages with a proposal that the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism issue a Decision on non-acceptance of the aforementioned Study,” said Ćurković.

They also invited all citizens, and especially various associations, to get involved in submitting objections to this study to the competent ministry, as the deadline for submitting objections is September 8 of this year.

The German company BH Magnezij & Minerali in cooperation with the company Dolomit d.o.o. from Kupres, which was bought by the German group Brilliant 3221 GmbH from Berlin, will soon start building a large industrial complex for the production of magnesium in the settlement of Osmanlije in the municipality of Kupres.

It was announced that it will be one of the most significant investments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where a large industrial complex will be built with facilities of a total area of 20,432 m2, including a land area of 7.3 hectares.

When carrying out the production process, the main raw material will be dolomite from a nearby quarry, and the product will be metallic raw magnesium, and the co-products will be spinel, dry ice, and an alloy of aluminum and magnesium.
