Member of the Presidency of BiH, Denis Bećirović, spoke tonight, April 23, with the President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella. During a lengthy telephone conversation, opinions and positions were exchanged on current political and security challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, as well as on bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.

President Mattarella reiterated the strong support of the Republic of Italy for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing that the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina is of great importance for the whole of Europe. He, among other things, said that he has an extremely positive memory of the visit of the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Denis Bećirović, to the Republic of Italy in 2024, and that he highly appreciates his views and policy of building a European Bosnia and Herzegovina. President Mattarella also underlined that the anti-constitutional laws of the RS entity are unacceptable and that Italy fully supports the activities of the High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During the conversation, Bećirović informed the President of the Republic of Italy in detail that the leadership of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian entity RS has carried out an attack on the constitutional order of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and on the fundamental provisions of the Dayton Peace Agreement. Such an anti-Dayton policy threatens peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. Unfortunately, the attack on the constitutional order is still ongoing, which is why the concrete support of the Republic of Italy and other allies to the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina is very important.

Bećirović and Mattarella expressed deep regret over the death of Pope Francis and agreed that his departure is an irreparable loss for the entire world. Pope Francis was a great friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina and someone who understood the multiethnic and multicultural nature of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Member of the Presidency of BiH, Denis Bećirović emphasized that the Republic of Italy is today one of the most important economic partners of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its role in post-war reconstruction, peace stabilization and building civil society in Bosnia and Herzegovina is also extremely important. He pointed out the importance of the decades-long alliance and partnership between the two countries.

Bećirović thanked President Mattarella for the continued support of the Republic of Italy for the European and Euro-Atlantic path of Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing the importance of Italy’s role in promoting the enlargement of the European Union to the Western Balkans. He emphasized that the Republic of Italy is an important ally of Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the process of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s accession to NATO.

The interlocutors agreed that the presence of EUFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina is of great importance for peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
