Countries that sell or supply weapons have responsibilities regarding how those weapons are used anywhere in the world, the United Nations (UN) said in relation to the use of weapons supplied by Western countries to Israel in war crimes.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told Anadolu news agency that there is increasing evidence that weapons given to Israel by Western countries are being used to commit war crimes in Gaza.
“Some of these countries are countries that have reduced their funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA),” said Dujarric.
He stated that this situation violates the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for Israel to take immediate steps to prevent genocide.
Emphasizing that the UN primarily wants the decisions of the ICJ to be respected, Dujarric also stated that they would like the funds for UNRWA to continue and even increase in view of the increasing needs.
“At the same time, countries that sell or deliver weapons have a responsibility for how those weapons are used anywhere in the world,” Dujarric said.
On January 26, following a genocide lawsuit filed by the Republic of South Africa, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel must refrain from any actions related to the killing, attacks and destruction of the residents of the Gaza Strip and take all measures to prevent genocide.
However, Israeli forces continue to attack the Gaza Strip, where around 28,500 Palestinians have been killed since October 7.
