Cultural Events that marked the Year of 2017 in BiH

The year of 2017 is almost over, and it brought a number of important events in all areas, including culture.

Representatives of the Association of Music Artists Tuzla submitted the initiative to nominate “sevdalinka” as an intangible cultural heritage of national importance to the Commission for Cooperation of BiH with UNESCO on January 12. The Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH, or the State Commission for Cooperation of BiH with UNESCO, accepted the initiative, which was referred to the further procedure.

On the initiative of the Embassy of Italy in BiH and on the occasion of the Day of Republic, the Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto presented the performance “the Third Paradise” in Sarajevo on June 2. “The Third Paradise” represents infinity, which the artist transformed by adding a central circle that was planned as an instrument of change and rebirth of the new humanity.

The National Museum of BiH and the Louvre Museum made their cooperation official on June 30, in Sarajevo, within which the Louvre will provide its expertise in the field of management of inventory, conservation and protection of depots. Their cooperation will be also realized through creation of a unique database, and the National Museum of BiH is already working on it.

Numerous people from the public life of BiH and celebrities from the region and the world attended the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival. This film festival ranked the city of Sarajevo very high on the list of world festivals. The biggest two stars of this year’s festival were John Cleese and Oliver Stone. Cleese received the Heart of Sarajevo Award for outstanding contribution to the art of film, and the award-winning director Stone received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo for outstanding contribution to the art of film.

Mikser House, a cultural institution that gathers cultural, educational and commercial activities in a multifunctional space, was opened in the capital of BiH on September 8.

The Sarajevo Haggadah and the Manuscript Collection of Gazi Husrev-bey’s library entered the Register of Memory of the World at the General Assembly of UNESCO, which took place on October 30, in Paris, with which BiH received the first two goods in that register.

At the 21st plenary session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention, which was held in Paris, BiH was elected as member state of the the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Committee (UNESCO).
