Even though the Constitutional Court of B&H declared the 9th of January, as “the Day of Republika Srpska” as unconstitutional, Serbian officials of this B&H entity today repeated that they will mark and celebrate this date.
President of Republika Srpska (RS) Milorad Dodik told reporters that these days “RS is celebrated as a proof of strengthening and commitment of its existence.”
“I am very pleased to see a good atmosphere for the celebration of the Day of RS, the atmosphere that is necessary to mark this important day in the history of the people and the state, RS, which was created on the 9th of January 1992, by the decision of the political representatives of the Serbian people before the armed conflict in B&H,” stated Dodik.
He added that the celebration of this day started today by laying wreaths for the fallen soldiers of RS.
Prime Minister of RS Zeljka Cvijanovic invited all citizens to display the flag of RS on their homes and “thus show the dignity and pride, and to mark the next day together.”
At the end of November last year, the Constitutional Court declared the “Day of the RS”, which is celebrated on the 9th of January, as unconstitutional, and decided that the National Assembly should harmonize controversial article of the Law on Holidays of RS with the Constitution of B&H within six months.
Serbian officials of RS then stated in a joint statement that the 9th of January will continue to be celebrated as “the Day of Republic” in that B&H entity.
Security measures around the headquarters of RS institutions have been intensified, and members of the RS police with long rifles are noticeable as well.
