”An expert witness for the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) stated that the respirators procured for the Federation of BiH (FBiH) in April 2020 were not suitable for the treatment of moderate to severe patients with Covid, ” Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) reports.

At the trial for abuses during the import of respirators, an expert in anesthesia and resuscitation Ismet Suljevic made a finding on respirators marked ACM 812A which were imported (100 pieces) under a contract between the Federal Civil Protection Administration (FUCZ) and the company “Srebrena Malina“.

Suljevic said that these respirators can be used in a shorter period when transporting patients.

“It should not be used in intensive care units, only in the transport,” the expert noted.

He explained that he performed the expertise by comparing the technical characteristics from the instructions for use of the ACM respirator and the “Evita XL Drager” respirator, which have been used for the last 15 years at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo.

Suljevic stated that “Evita” has significantly more forms of ventilation compared to ACM. He added that moderate and severe patients with diseases including covid need some form of ventilation that ACM does not have.

He added that the ACM does not even have a class designation indicating invasive intensive care respirators. He told that the instructions for use of ACM confirm that they are transport respirators, which is also indicated by the connection for ambulances.

“According to all the characteristics, it is a machine for transport purposes, ambulances or for transporting patients from the operating room to intensive care,” Suljevic explained.

The cross-examination of the expert witness has been postponed to next Friday, and the trial will continue on January 26th with the examination of four witnesses.
