Famous Italian Journalist reveals how the War in Yugoslavia could be prevented

yugoslavia flag“Back in 1990, when the situation was already getting heated and when the war started to seem as a fact, it was necessary to accept Yugoslavia into the EU. But this was not done. The same mistake was made back in 2000,” stated an Italian journalist Claudio Gherardini for Deutsche Welle.

“Everyone was familiar with the fact that our lives will not be the same after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but no one knew when and how much. I arrived in Berlin two days after the fall of the Berlin Wall. When conflicts started in the former Yugoslavia, I joined the process of organizing of humanitarian aid, first for Croatia,” he said.

While the Government of France, he recalled, was committed to Serbia, and the Government of Germany to Croatia, BiH was left on its own.

European countries have not done enough to try to prevent the war in BiH, he stated.

Europe, according to him, made two “enormous mistakes”, the first in 1990 and the other in 2000:

“Back in 1990, it was necessary to accept Yugoslavia into the EU. But this was not done. The same mistake was made back in 2000 again. If the possibility of accepting Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria in the EU was considered, and it was, then all the countries of the former Yugoslavia were supposed to be accepted. The EU was in much better condition and more open until 2004 than it is today,” explained Gherardini.

“The entry of BiH, Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro in the EU is the only realistic solution. There is simply no alternative,” concluded this famous Italian journalist.
