Leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) countries adopted a Declaration on the Climate Crisis and Other Global Challenges at the summit, after the text was drafted without the participation of the United States.

The Declaration highlighted the seriousness of climate change and the need for better adaptation, praised ambitious targets for promoting renewable energy sources and highlighted the problem of high debt of poor countries.

The host of the summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, said there was overwhelming consensus and agreement that adopting the declaration was one of the tasks that should be undertaken right from the start.

He thanked all the delegations that worked with South Africa on the document.

The administration of US President Donald Trump had previously opposed the announced topics of the summit and the tone of the Declaration, as it doubts the scientific consensus that global warming is caused by human activities.
