German Minister for Europe within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and member of the SPD Michael Roth arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) last night, and before his departure, he said that the current situation in BiH is frustrating and poses a threat to peace and stability throughout Europe.
“Calls for secession and moves to weaken the state by withdrawing from state institutions are irresponsible and unacceptable. They distract from the real tasks that political leaders should pursue, and that is implementing the accumulatedreforms necessary for greater convergence with the European Union (EU),” he said.
Roth stated that progress in this area is urgently needed in the interest of the country’s citizens and its economic development.
“Germany stands firmly on the side of all those in BiH who work for the democratic and European future of their country as a state that accepts the rule of law. I would like to encourage and motivate all such individuals to persevere in their efforts,” he concluded.
German Minister for Europe Michael Roth is in Sarajevo for political talks from November 30th to December 2nd, and his interlocutors will be Foreign Minister Bisera Turkovic, representatives of the three-member BiH Presidency, High Representative Christian Schmidt, and civil society representatives.
His talks, as announced, will focus on the current political situation and the country’s prospects for joining the EU.
Roth will also meet with members of the BiH parliament, and discussions will focus on topics such as reforms needed for greater convergence with the EU and the consequences of the current political stagnation.
