branimirGlavas was released from prison in Mostar on Tuesday after the Bosnian court ordered that he should be freed until a “new final verdict is delivered by the state responsible”, a reference to Croatia.

“My release from prison is the first step towards the final goal, which is proving my innocence, and a victory in proving the purity of the Homeland War [Croatian name for the 1991-95 conflict],” Glavas told journalists.

Glavas, a former high-ranking member of the Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ party who served as a member of parliament and as the Osijek-Baranja County mayor, was originally convicted in Croatia of war crimes against Serb civilians in the city of Osijek in 1991-92.

But he fled before the verdict to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where a court in December 2010 sentenced him to eight years in prison after a request was sent by Croatia to enforce his sentence.
