In the next fifteen days, at the General Assembly of UNESCO that started yesterday in Paris, should be made a decision to enter the Sarajevo Haggadah and the Collection of Manuscripts of the Gazi Husrev-bey’s Library to the Memory of the World Register, which is devoted to the movable cultural heritage of the world.
In that way, BiH would get its first two goods entered in that register, and it would also open the door for new nominations from the segment of movable goods. If no decision is made in the next fifteen days, it is expected that it will be done by the end of the year.
“BiH has a lot of movable goods, and this is one of the ways for their promotion. Those goods are well preserved in different places and in BiH institutions. It is very important to say that this is the beginning of the promotion of movable cultural goods in BiH because we have a lot to show, and we think that entering of these first two things in the register will be the initial capsule that will motivate others to promote all those values that BiH has in its possession,” said Head of the UNESCO Office in BiH, Sinisa Sesum.
The collection of manuscripts of the Gazi Husrev-bey’s library in Sarajevo contains 10,561 unique manuscripts, which are a part of around 20,000 major and minor works from Islamic sciences, oriental literature, beautiful literature, philosophy, logic, history, medicine, veterinary, mathematics, astronomy and other sciences.
The Sarajevo Haggadah is an extraordinary example of medieval Hebrew decorative arts. The handwriting is written on parchment, with numerous illustrations and it belongs to the most famous and most beautiful Hebrew enlightened manuscripts from the Middle Ages in the entire world. The Sarajevo Haggadah is originating from the mid-14th century, in the northern part of Spain. The National Museum of BiH purchased it in 1894 from Koen’s family, and it was declared as a moveable national monument of BiH back in the year of 2003.
