Bosnia and Herzegovina produced 1.2 million tons of municipal waste in 2021, which is 1.8 percent more than in 2020. Each inhabitant of Bosnia and Herzegovina produced an average of 356 kg of municipal waste last year.

In 2021, 940,405 tons of municipal waste were collected by public collection, which is 1.9 percent more compared to 2020.

The data indicating the origin of the collected municipal waste shows that the largest increase was registered in the collection of waste from households, as much as 80.9 percent of the total collected waste, according to the data of the BiH Agency for Statistics.

As part of municipal waste treatment, 973,000 tons of waste arrived at controlled landfills, of which 99.3 percent was permanently disposed of as a disposal option. The municipal waste disposal rate is lower by 11.1 percent in 2021, which is a noticeable drop compared to 2020.

The current trend indicates that more should be done to prevent waste generation, as well as to significantly increase the recycling rate in the coming years.

The above data are based on the methodology used for reporting on municipal waste, which the BiH Agency for Statistics (BHAS) submits to Eurostat on an annual basis.

Eurostat data on the generation and treatment of municipal waste, which are expressed in kilograms per inhabitant, are based on BHAS data on the total population, as a mid-year estimate, Fena news agency reports.
