Joint Session of B&H Parliament on Amendment to B&H Constitution

sjednicaMP’s and delegates of the House of Representatives and House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of B&H will consider at today’s joint session several amendments to the B&H Constitution, and adoption of some of these would allow the implementation of the ruling at the European Court for Human Rights Sejdić-Finci.

In other words, the B&H Constitution would be in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights and would allow non-constituent peoples to be elected to the B&H Presidency and the House of Peoples of the B&H Parliamentary Assembly. This issue is topical for more than four years, and is a brake for B&H’s paths towards the EU.

The leaders of seven political parties in B&H held a series of meetings, but none resulted in a decision to amend the Constitution.

The last meeting of B&H leaders with the European Commissioner for EU Enlargement Štefan Fule, which was held on Friday and lasted for 13 hours, did not result in a concrete solution, and some have said that the stances are far apart, and went beyond the scope of the implementation of Sejdić-Finci.

For an adoption of an amendment to the B&H Constitution, two-thirds majority in the Parliament of B&H is required.
