Magnificent Bridge and the Sound of Neretva in the beautiful Konjic

konjicNo matter how small the City of Konjic is in terms of surface area, its magic is unsurpassed.

It is hard to find people who speak about their city with so much love and, despite everything, stay loyal to it, no matter where they are in the world.

In the written documents Konjic is mentioned for the first time in 1982. There is a legend about the name of the city, which says: at the location of the current Boračko Lake there was a small settlement where one night an old man dressed as a beggar came. Since he had supernatural abilities, he knew that the settlement will be flooded that night. He went from one house to another, asking for food and refuge.

However, owners of those houses showed no understanding for him and forced him out of their homes. Only one old woman, whose house was one of the most deteriorated ones in the settlement, offered him a refuge and shared the last piece of bread with him.

The old woman was in trade business and the business was not going so well. When he was leaving, the thankful old man told her to get ready and go towards the valley where Konjic is situated today, because the settlement where she lived will be flooded in early morning hours. He also told her to start her trade business at the place where her horse stops itself.

She accepted his advice. During the night she embarked on a journey with her tired horse. When the horse stopped, she wanted to go on, but then she remembered the old man’s words. She stopped there and launched business which, at her surprise, was truly successful.

That is the story about the origin of Konjic, a trade town and a transit spot for all those who come from the north and go to the south and vice versa. All the passengers will be permanently tied to the city thanks to the sound of Neretva and its stunning emerald color.

People of Konjic are proud of everything that has something to do with their city, but their hearts fill the most when they look at the Old bridge. The Old stone bridge with six arches was built in 1682 and it was demolished on the last day of the Second World War. It waited for full 66 years to be reconstructed.

However, thanks to Turkish masters and funds from the Republic of Turkey, the magnificent arches overarched Neretva again.
