The Survey on Labor Force in BiH was conducted in mid-April 2017 on a sample of 10,629 households, out of which, 6,196 were in the FBiH, 3,356 in the RS and 1,057 in the Brcko District of BiH.

According to this data, the labor force in BiH (economically active population) amounted to 1,026,337, while the number of inactive population was 1,380,994. Moreover, there were 815,659 employed and 210,678 unemployed persons. There was a total of 32,168 unpaid assisting members of the household within the employed persons.

According to the Survey, the unemployment rate in BiH in 2017 was 20.5 % (18.9 % for men and 23.1 % for women), while in the same period of 2016 it was 25.4 % (22.5 % for men and 30 % for women). The unemployment rate was the highest among young people between 15 and 24 years old, and their unemployment was 45.8 % (43.1 % for men and 51.4 % for women).

According to the Survey, the rate of activity and employment in 2017 amounted to 42.6 % and 33.9 %, while in the year of 2016 they were 43.1 % and 32.2 %. The rates were higher for men in comparison to women. Rates of activity and employment for men were 53.3 % and 43.2 %, while the same rates for women amounted to 32.4 % and 24.9 %.

Data also showed that less than half of the working-capable population (42.6%) are active people, i.e. those who participate in the labor market as employed and unemployed persons.

The structure of the employed persons by the sector shows that the largest share of employed persons is in the sector of services with 51.6 %, then in the industry and construction sector with 29.5 %, and 18.9 % in the sector of agriculture, forestry and fishing.

In the above mentioned period, a total of 17.3 % of the unemployed citizens were looking for a job for less than a year, and 82.1 % of the unemployed citizens have been looking for a job for more than a year, which is a result of the post-war situation and transition of the economy in the territory of BiH.
