Montenegro has no Position on the co-sponsorship of the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica

The Government of Montenegro has not yet made a decision on the co-sponsorship of the United Nations (UN) Resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica.

Dozens of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and public figures asked the Government on April 16 to be a co-sponsor of the resolution, which is supported by the majority of the opposition in the Montenegrin parliament.

In the meantime, the government held a session on April 18, but did not put the NGO initiative on the agenda.

The Minister of European Affairs, Maida Gorčević, confirmed in parliament the next day that the executive power has not yet decided on the issue.

The initiative was supported, among others, by former Minister of European Affairs Jovana Marović and member of the Judicial Council Miodrag Iličković.

Meanwhile, the NGO initiative was supported by a third of the members of the Parliament of Montenegro – the opposition Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), the Social Democrats (SD) and the Bosniak Party.

The DPS said that “clearly presenting a position on genocide is not a matter of political duty”.

The resolution, initiated by Germany and Rwanda, calls for July 11 to be declared the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide.
