The High Commissioner of the United Nations (UN) for human rights, Volker Turk, announced that in Ukraine, where the war with Russia continues, more than 10,500 civilians have died, and more than 20,000 people have been injured.

An interactive dialogue was held on the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights entitled “Human Rights in Ukraine”.

Turk, whose video message was released at the meeting, noted that they had heard different stories about the human suffering they experience every day in Ukraine.

“I’m afraid the world has become numb to this crisis,” Turk said.

He reminded that the Russian-Ukrainian war started in February 2022.

Turk confirmed that more than 10,500 civilians were killed in Ukraine, and more than 20,000 were injured.

He stated that the actual figures could be higher.

Turk underlined that conflicts throughout Ukraine have intensified since last week and that Ukrainian children are deprived of the right to be educated in their own language.

He stated that in the last two years, the Russian armed forces have greatly violated international human rights and humanitarian law.

“Most of these violations ended after Ukraine returned some of the regions occupied by Russia,” Turk said.

Emphasizing that it is time to end this war, Turk added that the wounds caused by the war should be healed.
