The only one who produced handmade Coffee Mills in the former Yugoslavia

The Jagnjo family is the only one in the territory of the former SFRY that produced coffee mills manually.

There were factories in Pozarevac in Serbia and Gornji Vakuf in BiH in which coffee mills were produced with the use of machines, but despite them, they were brought for repair to Jagnjo family in Sarajevo.

Once upon a time, every household used to have a coffee mill because the coffee could not be bought like today.

“Today, only our diaspora buy them when they come to BiH in the summer in order to preserve the memory of past times and the days that are gone,” said Jagnjo, who taught the craft from his late father.

“Tourists usually come in front of my store and look at what I do. Then I go out and explain to them what is all this about because many of them did not have any idea what the coffee mill actually is,” said Jagnjo.

“Every family used handmade coffee mills that after some time had to be sharpened. Since they were thermally processed on fire, they were long-lasting” said Haris Jagnjo, the owner of the store, and added that they used to have so much work that they would make about 40 coffee mills in one series.

As a member of the Association of Old Crafts, Jagnjo received the Sixth April Award of the city of Sarajevo back in 2004.
