Ramadan, the Month of Fasting, Sacrifice and Generosity, began at Sunset

The blessed month of Ramadan began at sunset, and the first Tarawih prayer was performed on Wednesday evening. Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world will fast today on the first day of Ramadan, which this year has 29 days.

The beginning of the month of Ramadan is traditionally celebrated in Sarajevo by firing a cannon from the Yellow Bastion. After 29 years, Smail Krivić performed the gunner’s job for the last time on Wednesday evening.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam and represents a clear obligation for every adult, reasonable and healthy Muslim man and woman.

Fasting lasts from dawn until sunset. During the fast, believers are prohibited from eating and drinking, smoking, and having intimate relations.

Fasting, however, is not limited to abstaining from physical needs. It also includes guarding the tongue, gaze, and thoughts – not gossiping, not passing on other people’s words, guarding against inappropriate looks, and anything that undermines the value of fasting.

After the month of fasting, Muslims welcome Eid al-Fitr, one of the two biggest Muslim holidays, and the Eid prayer is on Friday, March 20, at 6:29 a.m.
