The Commission to Preserve National Monuments of B&H at the 61st session has declared the Sarajevo Čaršija as a national monument of B&H.
The Commission made the decision of declaring 11 national monuments in B&H, and among which is the historical area of the capital city of B&H, located in the area of Municipality Stari Grad.
The President of the Commission Ševo pointed out at today’s press conference that declaring Čarsija as a national monument of B&H was a long and complex process.
“The Commission has consulted with the relevant institutions from the field of heritage protection and urban planning in FB&H, Cantonal and Municipal level. The research and consultations started in March 2011, and the last meeting with relevant institutions was held in February, after which came the final decision that Sarajevo Čaršija to receive the status of a national monument”, explained Ševo.
She pointed out that Čaršija has lost its authenticity by building numerous unplanned objects, but the area is extremely valuable due to the fact that it is an urban matrix of Sarajevo, thus protective measures are focused to above all reduce interventions that have consequences of non expert constructions and to insist on the preservation of this area and to prevent the construction of objects that would jeopardize this unique space.
Necropolis and tombstones on Orzen in the Municipality Ilijaš were also declared B&H national monuments and the Commission has also included them in the list of endangered monuments.
