sarajevo112The Sarajevo Canton was visited by 31 964 tourists this month and they had 63 715 overnight stays which is an 8.1 percent increase in comparison to June 2013. They were most interested in events taking place in the city.

Spokeswoman of the Tourist Association of Canton Sarajevo Asja Hadžiefendić-Mešić told FENA that there was a record in last year’s tourist season in June and they had not expected it to be repeated again but because of numerous events in the city and marking of the centenary of World War I, the number of tourists was increased.

“Every year and every month bring new surprises and June saw a significant increase in the number of overnight stays which is fantastic,” Hadžiefendić-Mešić said.

Besides events in the city in connection to the centenary of WWI, tourists were interested in visiting Vrelo Bosne and spent two nights and three days on average in the city. Tour visits to villages Lukomir, Igman and Bjelašnica were not organized.

The most numerous guests were from Turkey, Croatia, South Korea, Germany, Slovenia, France, Serbia, Austria and Italy.

The tourist season will be shifted to August and September when a great number of visitors from Arab countries is expected.

“Those tourists stay a week longer than other tourists and are good buyers. They are interested in the city, the cultural and historic heritage and environment,” Hadžiefendić-Mešić said and added they are impressed with nature, villages and natural heritage in general.
