The seminar on the challenges of agricultural production in 2013 held in Bijelina on Friday was attended by Professors from the Universities in Belgrade, Banja Luka and East Sarajevo and more than 300 manufacturers from the Semberija region.

The RS Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Miroslav Milovanović said to journalists that it is very important to follow the scientific advancements in the area of agriculture and that they be applied in the field.

The Agriculture Faculty of University Bijeljina and the Assocation of Farmers of Semberija organized the seminar, and the President of this Association Ljubo Maletić said that farmers want to learn and to protect their production on 51.000 hectares of farmland in Semberija.

The Director of the RS Agriculture Institute Vojislav Trkulja talked about the redness of corn as a huge problem that has appeared in the region and here.

He recalled that corn is a national plant species in the RS and that corn is found on around 40 percent of arable land.

Trkulja conveyed to farmers from Semberija scientific knowledge on red corn, how to recognize disease and measures that they should take so that the disease does not spread.

He also stressed the importance of respecting the new regulations on the proper use of pesticides, which complies with European standards, and said that in addition to the quality and yield they should take into account that food that is produced is safe.

Trkulja said that in 2014 all agricultural production in the EU is moving towards integrated production and assessed that the Semberija has very favorable conditions and traditions for such production, as well as valuable producers, but that it is necessary to monitor and apply new knowledge and technologies.

Professor Grigorije Trifunović at the University of Belgrade spoke of the livestock production and concluded that Serbia and the RS have to use this natural resource, which provides significant income.
