An Israeli air strike in Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, killed senior Hamas official Salah al-Bardawel, a Hamas official told the BBC.
Locals said Bardawel, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, and his wife were killed in the airstrike.
Israeli officials had no comment.
The Israeli military continued its heavy bombardment of Gaza on Tuesday, accusing Hamas of refusing to extend the first phase of a ceasefire that came into effect on January 19.
Hamas has denied the allegations and in turn accused Israel of violating a deal brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the US.
