Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK and Ireland were left without power and millions were warned to stay indoors today after strong winds and heavy rain lashed the region.

Wind gusts of up to 149 kilometres per hour were recorded and around three million homes in Wales and southwest England were issued with a storm warning.

Authorities have warned people to stay indoors for the duration of Storm Darragh.

On Friday, the UK’s Met Office issued a red storm warning. Thousands of homes in Northern Ireland, Wales and western England were left without power overnight.

In Ireland, nearly 400,000 homes, farms or businesses were left without power due to the storm. Some flights at Dublin Airport were cancelled.

A large number of motorways and bridges across the country were closed due to strong winds, and several train lines were suspended, AA writes.
