Thirty members of the European Parliament have sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, calling for an investigation into the European Union (EU) Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi’s role in helping Milorad Dodik’s separatist activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
In a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, parliamentarians from several political groups emphasized they were monitoring the situation in BiH and stressed that BiH’s territorial integrity was crucial, not only for the local but also for the regional and European perspective.
“That is why we are extremely upset by the latest escalation of political tensions in BiH, supported by Milorad Dodik, a member of the BiH Presidency. If Dodik seeks to divide the state and establish an independent Republika Srpska (RS) by withdrawing from BiH institutions and establishing independent bodies in RS, and he manages to do it, the consequences will be felt far beyond BiH’s borders, and European foreign policy will have severe consequences, “ it was said in the letter.
In this letter, parliamentarians pointed out that the European Commission has a key role to play in ensuring respect for the conclusions of the Dayton Agreement and ensuring peace in BiH.
“Not all EU countries share these goals. It is reported that the current Hungarian government is actively supporting Dodik’s campaign to divide BiH even through 100 million euros in aid that Hungary is giving to RS ahead of general elections in BiH,” it was said.
Afterward, parliamentarians referred to the work of EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi and his role in supporting Milorad Dodik.
“Even more disturbing is the published document signed by the head of the European Delegation to BiH, Johann Sattler, which states that Oliver Varhelyi is openly negotiating with Milorad Dodik on the disintegration of BiH. Reports show that Commissioner Varhelyi agreed with Dodik on the date of a special session of the RS National Assembly, and a six-month moratorium on laws involving unilateral withdrawal from state institutions,” the parliamentarians said in a letter.
At the end of the letter, the parliamentarians emphasized that the European Commissioner cannot act contrary to the official policy of the EU towards the Western Balkans.
