The Greek Coast Guard successfully intercepted a shipment of cocaine valued at over €1 million on August 5, 2024. The operation took place off the coast of Piraeus, one of Greece’s busiest ports, following a coordinated surveillance and intelligence effort.

Authorities detected suspicious activity involving a small cargo vessel that had been under observation for several weeks. The vessel was tracked and ultimately boarded by the Coast Guard, leading to the discovery of approximately 50 kilograms of high-purity cocaine hidden in secret compartments.

The successful seizure is part of Greece’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The Greek Coast Guard, working in collaboration with international partners, has intensified its operations against organized crime networks attempting to use the Mediterranean Sea as a route for smuggling illicit substances into Europe.

In connection with the seizure, five crew members of the vessel, all of foreign nationality, were arrested and are currently being held for questioning. The authorities are conducting further investigations to identify the broader network involved in this trafficking operation.

The Minister of Shipping and Island Policy commended the Coast Guard’s efforts, stating, “This seizure is a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the region and underscores our commitment to protecting our borders and communities from the scourge of illegal drugs.”

This latest bust follows a series of successful operations by the Greek Coast Guard, highlighting their enhanced capabilities and determination to tackle maritime drug trafficking.
