The worst Period of Air Pollution is behind us

It is the beginning of February and the worst period in terms of air pollution is behind us, but of course, we can still expect days with a high level of pollution, said Enis Omercic from the Federal Hydro-Meteorological Institute (FHMZ) of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

“Although we remain at the very top of the charts, however, the concentrations are much lower. This is mainly due to somewhat more favorable meteorological conditions that prevail and stable situations do not last for many consecutive days, as was the custom,” said Omercic.

He added that in the previous days, there was increased pollution in the valley-basin parts of BiH, especially in Sarajevo, Zenica, in the entire valley of Bosnia, Tuzla, Zivinice, Lukavac, Bihac. In Herzegovina and western Bosnia, the air quality was generally much better.

”The level of pollution that we had in the previous days is lower than the one that was around the New Year and in December when normally we have the highest concentrations of pollutants, but the air is still occasionally unhealthy. The last three days we had oscillations, almost every day there were periods with slightly cleaner air and a good part of the day in which the air was quite polluted,” Omercic stated.

Moreover, Omercic said that since the day before yesterday, concentrations have gradually started to fall at almost all measuring points, so the air quality yesterday is quite good.

“In Sarajevo, Gorazde, and the Bosna river valley, the air is moderately polluted this morning, it is clean in Herzegovina, Livno, and Bihac. In Travnik, the air is quite good as well. Slightly more concentrated pollution is again this morning in Tuzla and Zivinice,” Omercic said yesterday.
