The third Media and Digital Literacy Camp for youth started on Friday, 13 March 2026, in Sarajevo. The camp brings together 19 young participants from across Bosnia and Herzegovina who will, over the course of four days, have the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, learn how to verify information, and navigate the digital space safely, through interactive workshops, lectures, and practical exercises.
The camp programme focuses on topics such as media and digital literacy, fact-checking, understanding how media and social networks function, as well as the challenges brought by new technologies, including the development of artificial intelligence.
By working with experts in the fields of media, communications, and technology, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to recognise manipulative content, analyse the credibility of information sources, and use digital tools responsibly.
Ferdinand Koenig, Head of Communications and Spokesperson of the EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighted the importance of developing media and digital literacy among young people: “Producing believable, but fake content has become increasingly easy, posing enormous risks for democratic systems that rely on trust and accountability. It is crucial that citizens in a democracy have tools to make informed decisions. One of the most important of these is the ability to distinguish verifiable and accurate information from disinformation and so-called ‘AI slop’. The EU will continue to promote efforts that protect democratic values, including by financing media literacy training.”
During the camp, participants will discuss disinformation, the role of media in contemporary society, as well as the responsible use of digital technologies.
Darko Brkan, Executive Director of the Citizens’ Association “Why not”, emphasized the value of such educational programmes for young people: “At a time when credible information is becoming increasingly rare and valuable, when the influence of artificial intelligence on how people receive information is growing, and when new challenges await us across every part of the online space, it is crucial that we are all as prepared as possible. This can only be achieved by strengthening media and information literacy for everyone, especially young people. That is precisely why we know how important programs such as this camp are, and we thank all the participants and lecturers of this and previous camps, as well as the European Union, which made these camps possible.”
Camp participants have different backgrounds and interests, but share a common goal – to develop knowledge and skills that will help them better navigate today’s complex information environment.
The Media and Digital Literacy Camp for youth is organized by the citizens’ association “Why not” within the European Union project “Raising Awareness and Knowledge of Media Literacy among Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
