The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina handed down a first-instance verdict by which Miroslav Marković was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the crime committed in the village of Lokanj near Zvornik in the summer of 1992.
Marković was convicted of crimes against humanity, and found guilty of participating in the murders of Bosniak civilians in the village of Lokanj.
The indictment states that Marković, as a member of the Lokanje Company of the Zvornik Brigade of the Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS), participated in the imprisonment, abuse and murder of 67 Bosniak civilians in the Lokanj area in July 1992. According to the indictment, the column with civilians was moving from Teocak.
The state court issued a decision ordering Marković into custody.
Marković, who lives in Austria, did not appear at the first-instance verdict.
Earlier, in another case of crimes in Lokanj, Ljiljan Mitrović, Mile Vujević, Vukašin Drašković and Gojko Stevanović were sentenced to a total of 53 years in prison, while Goran Maksimović, Slavko Perić, Rajo Lazarević and Mićo Manojlović were acquitted.
Marković is allowed to appeal the verdict, reports BIRN BiH – Detektor.ba.
