Tribute to the Founder of the City of Sarajevo paid through a Visit to Objects from Isa-bey’s Vakufnama

A symbolic historical walk and a visit to objects from Vakufnama of Isa-bey Ishakovic, who was the founder of the city of Sarajevo, took place within the event “Isa-beg Ishakovic 2018”.

Besides representatives of the Association for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage Isa-bey Ishakovic and members of the City Administration, numerous citizens also joined a walk that included visits to Bentbasa, the square of Bascarsija, Kolobara Han and the Emperor’s Mosque. They used this opportunity to get to know all the details of Vakufnama a little bit better.

“It is not just a coincidence that our walk started on Bentbasa, because the first urban part of the city was built there. The first institution was built before 1462, and it included several objects, primarily musafirhana (place for guests and travelers) and later tekke. The further urbanization of the City of Sarajevo started from here,” said Elvis Pivic, the President of the Board of the Association Isa-bey Ishakovic.

He especially noted that Isa-bey did not consider the city walls as necessary, but he made an open city from Sarajevo, which always welcomed everyone and offered the very best of itself.

The walk was continued to the square of Bascarsija and Kolobara Han (inn), which is one of the oldest buildings that is still in its original form. Around 50 inns were built during the Ottoman rule in Sarajevo, of which only two are still working – Kolobara and Morica Han, but they are not serving their original purpose anymore. They completed the walk with the visit of one of the oldest mosques in BiH, the Emperor’s mosque, and the tomb of Isa-beg Ishakovic is placed in its backyard.

The senior expert associate of the Oriental Institute of Sarajevo, Aladin Music, presented the details of the anthology “Isa-bey Ishakovic and his time,” which was officially presented in the City Hall later that day.
