Which countries have received the most BH Refugees during the Nineties?

BH Refugees in Nineties dnevnik.hrIn recent weeks, the refugee crisis has caused turmoil in Europe, and the solution to this problem is not in sight in the near future.

Certain analytics consider this crisis has just begun, since the largest number of immigrants is still to head towards Europe.

The announcements of the construction of new border walls on this continent, controversial statements on undesirability of refugees expressed by certain European officials, as well as the indolence of certain transit countries, are only deepening the suffering of thousands of Syrians who are fleeing their country before the terror of war.

Unfortunately, the history is repeating itself, since numerous Bosnians and Herzegovinians were found in a similar situation in the period from 1992 to 1995. Back then, just like today, certain European countries did very little, while some received and provided basic life necessities to hundreds of thousands of BH refugees.

According to the report of the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of B&H, in the period from 1992 to 1995 1.2 million citizens left B&H.

Absolute record holder in the number of received BH refugees during the nineties was Germany, which received 320.000 persons, 297.000 persons left to Serbia and Montenegro, while Croatia (170.000) and Austria (86.500) also received a large number of refugees.

A significant number of refugees was received by Sweden, Slovenia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, as well as the overseas countries Australia, the USA, and Canada, which received more refugees than some of the exceptionally developed European countries. For example, France opened the doors for only 6.000 BH citizens.

What is interesting is that, during the nineties of the past century, Hungary – which is now building walls on its borders and strives to get rid of the immigrants as soon as possible – received 7.000 BH refugees.
