Construction of a new prison in Mostar began five years ago, and a lot of work is still left to be done. Process of construction has been entirely blocked by the former federal authorities and this story is being revitalized now. According to the warden of the Penitentiary Mostar Romeo Zelenika, this year they managed to finish operations related to electrical energy and water supply networks, and it is still uncertain what will be happening next year.
“We have no more funds at disposal for continuation of construction. Four million BAM have been invested in the project so far and 28 million BAM more are needed in order to complete the project. We do not know if we will get any funds for continuation of construction next year,” said Zelenika.
Minister of Justice of FBiH mato Jozić confirmed that it cannot be expected from federal authorities to provide funds for this purpose next year, but alternative solutions are being searched for.
“I can only say that I will try to provide certain funds for this project through the international community. We will invest a lot of efforts in order to provide conditions for continuation of construction of the prison in Mostar and I believe we will manage to do it with the help of the international community,” said Jozić.
Current prison in Mostar is located in the center of the town, which is certainly not an appropriate location for such institution. Construction of a new prison in southern part of the city would also launch the development of that part of Mostar.
The prison should have the capacity to accommodate 400 prisoners, 200 of whom would be situated in the closed part of the institution and 200 in the semi-open part of the prison.
