At the invitation of the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) Csaba Kőrösi and the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Duarte Pacheco, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Denis Zvizdić is attending a two-day conference in New York called “Water for People and Planet: Stop the waste, change the game, invest in the future“, announced the Public Relations Department of PSBiH.
At the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, the conference is attended by more than 250 members of parliaments, presidents and other officials from more than 60 countries.
During his address, the President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Csaba Kőrösi, said that we live in a time of multiple and interconnected crises.
– But the biggest one we are facing is the water crisis. Almost all climate change is felt through water – we either have too much, too little or it is not potable. The policies we implement now will not only affect us, but will dictate how our children and our grandchildren will live. We are ready for changes in the game, but we need support to turn them into reality – a reality that will change lives for all of humanity – he said.
IPU President Duarte Pacheco said that although our planet is called the blue planet, billions of people do not have access to clean water and sanitation.
– It is good news that water and sewage problems can be solved by coordinated national and international action. And that’s where parliamentarians can make a difference. Change is possible when governments lead smart policies and when parliaments demand accountability and help implement those obligations through laws and budgets – emphasized Pacheco during his address.
The conference follows a resolution recently adopted by the UN General Assembly which highlights the key role that parliaments play in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a universally agreed plan for a better and more sustainable future for all. The General Assembly resolution recognizes the key role of national parliaments in reviving the Sustainable Development Goals through their legislative and budget-making powers.
Chairman Zvizdić will meet with the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres today at the UN headquarters in New York.
