Throwing roses into the Buna river and lighting candles marked the 34th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Serbs from the area around Mostar. On this day in 1992, 29 people were killed in the town of Buna, including 18 soldiers and 11 Serbian civilians. In the following days, 82 persons of Serbian nationality were taken from their homes and are still being searched for.

On the 5th of June of that year, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Mostar, then the largest Orthodox place of worship in the Balkans, was also burned to the ground, the restoration of which is still ongoing, and where today a memorial service is held for the victims.

For crimes against Serbs in Mostar, two trials for crimes in the “Dretelj” camp were conducted before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In these processes, six persons, former members of the Croatian Defense Forces (HOS), were convicted.

Aljonka Dželetović, president of the Organization of Families of Captured and Killed Fighters and Missing Civilians in Nevesinje, said that 34 years have not brought oblivion, but even greater strength and desire for truth and justice, which has been waiting all these years.

According to the data of the Republic Center for War Research of the RS, 526 persons of Serbian nationality, 380 soldiers and 146 civilians, were killed in the area of Mostar.
