The chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) met today in Zagreb with the president of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic. The topic of the meeting was the bilateral relations of the countries, the political situation in BiH, and its Euroatlantic path.

Regarding the construction of the Peljesac bridge, Covic informed Grabar Kitarovic that there are no formal or legal barriers to continuation of the project and that individual opinions and reactions of some officials in BiH cannot effect that, Covic said.

He added that certain political powers in BiH are using the question of the Peljesac bridge for political purposes and in the 2018 election campaign.

“Because of that, problems in the bilateral relations with Croatia where they objectively don’t exist are being created. It’s true that bridges connect and that both countries will have use from the bridge, namely the local community in Neum, which will be able to function much more normally during the summer season,” Covic said.

Both concluded that the Peljesac bridge is an important project, for both countries, the region and the EU. It’s a project that should be welcomed and is in the interest of all. It’s also important to note that Croatia is building the bridge exclusively on its own territory and isn’t isolating BiH in any way. On the contrary, its construction is bringing new opportunities, especially in the tourist sector for Neum,” the press release states.

Changing the Election Law of key significance for the stability of BiH, the two concluded, especially those clauses regarding the election of members of the House of Peoples of the Federation of BiH, which the Constitutional Court of BiH declared void.

It concerns the most important decision of the highest judicial instance in BiH, which is directly connected to the foundational constitutional principle of constituencies and must be carried out in order to ensure fair political participation and decision-making of the constituencies, through their legitimately elected political representatives.

The two concluded that not carrying out this decision endangers the principles of the Dayton peace agreement and its constitution, and will have further repercussions regarding the unequal position of the Croats in BiH.
