An evening dress worn by Princess Diana sold for $1.1 million, 11 times its estimate, according to Los Angeles-based Juliens auction house. This broke the record price for one of her dresses at auction.
Diana, who died on August 31, 1997 in Paris, first wore the black and blue evening dress in Florence in 1985 and was photographed in it a year later during a visit to Vancouver, the auction house said.
The dress, along with matching artwork, sold for $1,148,080, the statement added.
Estimated value was $100,000 to $200,000.
The dress is made of long black velvet with embroidery in the form of blue stars, with a double-layered blue skirt decorated with a belt and a bow. At the same auction, the pink blouse that Diana wore for her engagement portrait with the then Prince Charles from 1981 was sold for $381,000.
The blouse, made by David and Elizabeth Emmanuel, who designed Diana’s wedding dress, was estimated at $80,000 to $100,000, Srna news agency writes.
