Analysis of satellite Imagery showed that Sarajevo is ”The Greenest” Capital in Europe

According to a study conducted by researcher at the Agricultural Research Center Muncheberg Phillipp Gartner, Sarajevo is ”The greenest” capital in Europe. Of neighboring cities, Ljubljana is located on the third, Zagreb on the 12th , and Belgrade on the 23rd place.

Because of the growing global trend of migration from rural to urban areas, parks, gardens and city greenery in general are becoming more important. While life in urban centers can lead to easier employment, education, health care, it has its negative side, such as increased stress, less open space, fresh air and nature.

Researcher Phillipp Gartner wanted to find an answer to the question of which of the European cities is ”The Greenest”. He used a method that processed satellite imagery and compared the vegetation indices of 42 capitals in Europe, and the survey covered an area of eight kilometers from the city center .
”Located in the Sarajevo valley, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated along the river Miljacka, Sarajevo is one of the smallest capitals in Europe,” said the Gartner’s analysis.
