Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in a telephone conversation with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad has said that attacking Iran’s consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus by the Zionist regime is a violation of all international obligations and conventions, IRNA reports.
During a telephone conversation on Monday, Amirabdollahian and Mekdad discussed various dimensions of the current crimes committed by the Zionist regime in Damascus.
Amirabdollahian thanked his Syrian counterpart for attending Iran’s embassy in Damascus after the attacks, saying that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had completely lost his mental balance due to repeated defeats of the regime in Gaza and not achieving the ambitious goals of the Zionists.
Terming the attacks on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus as a violation of all international obligations and conventions, he held the Zionist regime responsible for the consequences of such acts and stressed the need for a serious reaction by the international community to such criminal acts.
Mekdad, for his part, strongly condemned the Zionist regime’s attacks on Iran’s consulate in Syria, describing such attacks as a gross violation of international law, especially the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in 1961.
Syrian state media announced that a building that is part of the Iranian Embassy was demolished in an attack in Damascus, and it is assumed that it was an Israeli attack. In addition, a senior official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed.
Namely, the multi-story building that was located in the Mezzeh district, located in the west of the city, was demolished. Iranian media announced that the annex of the Iranian Embassy was actually destroyed, but that the Iranian ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, and his family members were not injured.
Syrian media reports did not state that anyone was killed, but according to some other sources, six people died.
The Syrian army previously announced that they had intercepted, as they stated, enemy targets with anti-aircraft defense near Damascus, the BBC reports.
On the other hand, the Saudi news agency Al-Arabiya, referring to the Iranian media, announced that a high-ranking official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, was killed in an Israeli attack on Damascus. Iranian state television reported that several Iranian diplomats were also killed in the attack.
