A bridge collapsed on Sunday in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH’s) capital Sarajevo, after Zeljeznica river overflew it, local media Avaz reported Sunday.

Due to temperatures above zero degrees Celsius that caused snow to melt abruptly and heavy rainfall that hit BiH’s capital Sarajevo on Sunday, level of Zeljeznica river increased and caused newly built bridge to collapse, Oslobodenje newspapers reports.

“The construction of bridge was just finished and it connected the Luzani and Pejton settlements. A large part of the structure was collapsed, and, at this moment, it is possible to expect the entire structure to be collapsed,” Director of Cantonal Civil Protection Samir Dzihic confirmed for Avaz newspapers.

Fortunately, during the bridge collapse, there were no injured persons, however, numerous residents showed that they are worried if Zeljeznica river breaks through the protective fence and floods the settlement.

On Saturday, the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute warned that there is a risk of spilling rivers from the basin. According to the data issued by the Institute, cloudy weather with a lot of rain, strong winds and unusually high temperatures for February are expected.
