Construction of the Section that will connect Tunnel Karaula with the Main Road M-18?

karaulaSince putting the tunnel Karaula into operation is technically not possible, the investor, PE Roads of the FBiH, is considering the possibility to put the newly built tunnel into operation by construction of a temporary junction of the tunnel with parts of the route in front and behind the object to the existing main road M-18.

Continuation of the construction, as confirmed from PE Roads of FBiH, foresees the construction of the section that connects the main road M-18 with tunnel Karaula and includes the construction of an additional part of the route with a total length of 1,506 m (1.5 km) and the construction of two bridges in the length of 280 meters and 120 meters.

For this purpose, the entire tender procedure has been completed, and when the financial resources of the Program of loans for modernization of roads in the FBiH become operational, we will sign the contract for conducting of works, as emphasized from the Roads of FBiH.

Tunnel Karaula is located on the M-18, section Kladanj-Podpaklenik over the pass Karaula in a length of 903 m, with a tunnel for the evacuation with a length of 435 meters and open part of the route in front and behind the tunnel, with a total length of 1,200 meters.

The existing Contract on construction of the tunnel Karaula was signed on the 14th of April 2014, but the time of construction was exceeded due to a number of circumstances, and Annex no. 1 of the contract for the extension period was signed concluding with the 15th of July 2016.

“Construction works on the construction of the tunnel are completed and the installation of equipment and arrangement of construction site are in progress. However, due to lack of development of the route that connects the tunnel with the existing main road, putting the object into operation is not possible yet,” as emphasized from the Roads of FBiH.

According to the former calculation of works as well as those that follow, works should not exceed the agreed amount. The agreed value of the works is 24,257,083.13 BAM including VAT.

“The benefits that tunnel Karaula will bring reflect in shortening the length of the existing main road M-18 Tuzla-Sarajevo, lowering of the pass Karaula for an altitude of about 100 meters, increasing the level of services of the main road, shortening of travel time, improving the driving conditions and reducing costs of winter maintenance of the main road,” as stated from the Roads of FBiH.
