Departure of BiH Citizens to foreign Battlefields stopped

Dragan Mektić faktor.baMinister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Mektić said that the year 2016 was very dynamic and challenging in terms of security.

“When we look back at 2016, we can say it was very dynamic and challenging in terms of security, not only for the Ministry of Security but also for all security agencies. Due to security threats and attacks that happened in BiH and Europe, we entered 2016 facing serious terrorist threats, which called for serious work and engagement of all institutions in order to prevent the repetition of those acts,” said Mektić.

Mektić said that results and statistics say that success was achieved because the departure of BiH citizens to foreign battlefields stopped and those who returned were charged or processed, while some of them like the informal leader of the Wahhabi community Bilal Bosnić were even condemned.

“Also, we dedicated our energy to preventive action, which is a more complex and more difficult task, but also more efficient because it removes the causes of problems. We made first steps forward there and in the coming period we will do some serious work on deradicalization and distraction of especially young people from radicalism and extremism,” said Mektić.

Mektić also said that the Ministry of Security of BiH created an ambiance and together with agencies that operate within the Ministry showed full readiness for uncompromised battle against organized crime and corruption.

Mektić hopes that this will be the priority in 2017 because without serious engagement on this issue BiH will be farther and farther from the European Union and closer to the European bottom.

Mektić stated that the Ministry strives to contribute to the strengthening of regional cooperation, and in that context he emphasized an important project of integrated management of internal affairs in the region, which is grounded on three pillars – security of the borders, organized crime which includes fight against illegal weapon trade, and the fight against terrorism.

“Holders of the first two projects will be international organizations and there is a chance that the Ministry of Security of BiH becomes the holder of the last project,” Mektić said.

When it comes to plans for 2017, Mektić added that the Ministry of Security of BiH will remain committed to the mentioned security challenges, including the fight against terrorism, organized crime, and corruption.
