The EU to open Negotiations on the Operation of Frontex in BiH?

The Council of the European Union adopted a decision on the approval of the opening of negotiations with BiH on the agreement between the EU and BiH on actions that the European Border and Coast Guard Agency – Frontex is conducting in the territory of BiH.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency – Frontex had previously cooperated with BH authorities but the new agreement should further expand this cooperation as part of the larger authorization and competencies of Frontex. Executive Director of Frontex, Fabrice Leggeri, talked about this in the month of July.

Leggeri visited BiH back then. Frontex (French: Frontières extérieures – external borders) is the agency of European Union that has the mandate of supporting border management and coastal guards. It was established back in 2005, however, its mandate was extended due to the migration crisis in 2015 and 2016.

“Frontex will be more present in BiH and it will offer its support to this country on its path to EU membership,” said Leggeri.
