What does the former Croatian President say about the Referendum?

mesicReferendum on the celebration of January 9 as the Day of Republika Srpska caused some seriously harsh critics in international public.

Constitutional Court of BiH imposed a temporary suspension measure for the referendum, but authorities in Banja Luka did not accept that. That move caused severe tension in BiH, but also increased the international tensions in the country.

Former president of Croatia Stjepan Mesić said that the referendum which is being held today means nothing, but that its danger can be reflected in the fact that this referendum might be an overture into the referendum on secession of Republika Srpska and its annexation to Serbia.

„This is one attempt, one experiment used by Milorad Dodik to show that he can organize a referendum with severe consequences, the one which would annexate Republika Srpska to Serbia. That was the plan of Slobodan Milošević and Dodik most likely wants to make it happen,“ Mesić believes.

Mesić claims that even bigger problem than Milorad Dodik at this moment is Serbia itself and the Serbia leadership, who should have reacted more strictly to the referendum in Republika Srpska.

„Serbia should not have distanced itself from the referendum so easily. Reactions should have been way more strict. One one hand, Serbia accepts the integrity of BiH, and on the other hand they accept Milorad Dodik and his refusal to recognize Bosnia and Herzegovina as a unique country. That is a dual policy that cannot exist in the present Europe,“ Mesić warned.
