Hague Prosecution appealed against the Verdict of Šešelj

seseljThe Hague Prosecution filed an appeal against the verdict that acquitted the leader of the Serb Radical Party (SRS) Vojislav Šešelj of the guilt for the crimes committed in BiH, Serbia and Croatia.

In the appeal signed by the prosecutor Barbara Goy, the Hague prosecutors stated that the Trial Panel has made a mistake in application of laws and factual conclusions, requesting that Šešelj is either declared guilty or that the procedure is repeated before the Mechanism for International Tribunals – institution founded to terminate the work of the Hague Tribunal.

“After the appeal is accepted and a decision is reached on Šešelj’s guilt, the Appellate Council should convict the accused Šešelj. The severity of the crime, as well as numerous aggravating circumstances, mean that the accused should be sentenced to 28 years in prison, and that is what the prosecution has requested in the first place,” it was stated in the appeal.

The prosecutors stated that if the Appellate Council does not change the verdict, they should at least order a new trial.

“Intervention of the Appellate Council is in the interest of justice, especially for the victims of the crimes and for the international community and for the legacy of the ICTY and the Mechanism for International Tribunals,” it was stated.
