Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz confirmed that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had been killed.
“The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, who was responsible for the massacre and atrocities on October 7, was killed today by IDF soldiers,” Katz said in a statement.
Confirmation also came from the Israeli army: “Yahya sinwar has been eliminated”.
A little earlier, Israel confirmed to American officials that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is dead, which was confirmed by the initial DNA results, said Ivor familiar with the topic.
According to Israel Military Radio, which is owned and operated by the Israeli army (IDF), Sinwar was likely killed when an Israeli tank fired a missile at the house early Thursday morning after suspicious movement was detected on its upper floor.
The radio station says that later in the morning, Israeli drones flew over the area of the attack, and soldiers recognized Sinwar’s face among the rubble. The IDF had previously detected unusual activity in the area, which is why they decided last week to intensify searches and remain in the location, reports CNN.
Sinwar was one of the main leaders of Hamas and a key architect of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the current conflict in Gaza.
Sinwar was imprisoned in Israeli prisons throughout his life and has a long history of fighting against Israel. He was released in a prisoner exchange deal in 2011. He later took over the leadership of the Hamas movement in Gaza and was also responsible for conducting numerous military activities and operations against the Israeli army.
In August, Hamas appointed its Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar as political chief to succeed Ismail Haniyeh, following his assassination. The Gaza-based Palestinian leader was public enemy number one in Israel. By choosing him as head of its political bureau, Hamas sent a message of defiance to the Israeli government.
