Increase in Number of Patients recorded in Canton Sarajevo

Due to extremely high air temperatures, a few more cases of collapse were recorded on the field, which was to be expected with such temperatures – said Dr. Edin Jusufbegović, specialist in emergency medicine at the “Institute for Emergency Medical Assistance” of Sarajevo Canton.

He warned that chronic patients, immunocompromised persons, should take therapy regularly, and that those who take care of patients who cannot take care of themselves must take care that patients take therapy in adequate quantities and in accordance with their vital parameters.

Jusufbegović pointed out that citizens should, as far as possible, avoid exposure to high temperatures, because all weather alarms have been activated.

“It is necessary to take as much liquid as possible. There are very large invisible sweat losses other than urination, so large amounts of fluid must be taken to compensate for this. The moment we lose the ability to sweat and lose heat through sweating, we get heatstroke, which is a life-threatening condition,” said Dr. Jusufbegović.

It is also recommended that the population should, if possible, avoid exposure to high temperatures, direct solar radiation, which can lead to sunburn and skin burns.

“It is necessary to reduce movement to a minimum, take plenty of fluids, especially plain water. Do not take carbonated and sweet juices, only plain water and possibly mix some rehydration solutions in the water, which actually have the same composition as the infusion, which are isotonic, which are absorbed very quickly in the digestive tract,” said Jusufbegović.
