The Agency for Food Safety in BiH said that they received notice from Konzum d.o.o. Sarajevo that ‘Rial’ tuna in brine, packages of 160 grams and with an expiration date until October 2015 was not exported to BiH. This product was removed from the Croatian market due to unacceptable amounts of histamines.

The Food Safety Agency says that on 9 February they made a request to the relevant authorities of BiH, entities and Brčko district to take measures to increase control and inspection of the presence of this product in BiH. The goal is to ensure a high level of consumer health protection in BiH.

The Agency says that consuming food that contains a small amount of histamine will not lead to serious health problems, but if consumed in large quantities it can be toxic.

They say that histamine appears as a result of improper food storage at higher temperatures. To prevent the emergence of histamines, temperature should be from 1-4 degrees, as well as control of the fish and reducing the microbial contamination of the fish.
