Officials announced Monday that more than 60 people have died in three Indian states due to massive flooding caused by heavy rains over the past few days.

The affected states include Gujarat in the west and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the south. Gujarat reported the highest number of deaths – more than 45.

Nine deaths were recorded in Telangana and ten in Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Army is deployed in Gujarat, where floods have devastated large areas since August 27th.

Troops and specialized equipment are working around the clock to assist in rescue operations.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, promised to speed up relief efforts.

In Telangana, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced a financial relief package of nearly $5,960 to the families of those killed in the floods. Reddy also urged the Federal Government of India to classify the disaster as a “national calamity”.
