Pigeons were symbolically released from the City Hall on Saturday, sending messages of peace and community, understanding and dialogue from our capital.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH’s) capital also participated this year in the action of cities around the world to mark the International Day of Peace, 21st September, established by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of establishing and maintaining peace.
“We who have survived the most severe forms of aggression and genocide in the recent past, the longest siege of a capital city, must advocate and promote peace and nonviolence on a daily basis, respect for human dignity and respect for diversity,” said Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka.
iThis is also the Day when the City of Sarajevo remembers all innocent citizens killed in the past war, especially its youngest citizens.
The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution 36/37, the General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”
